EPD OPERATIONS

TRAFFIC

Our Traffic Unit consists of two full time officers: Corporal Jennifer Mayberry and Officer J. D. Lunceford. These officers are responsible for traffic law enforcement, accident investigation and accident prevention.

Officers Mayberry and Lunceford are also the primary instructors for the defensive driving course. The defensive driving course is now offered as an alternative for traffic offenders. Anyone receiving a ticket for a traffic offense may choose to take one two hour class, which will cancel the ticket, rather than appear in court and/or pay the fine.

The officers assigned to the Traffic Unit generally are on duty during peak traffic times during the week.

STAR TEAM

The Traffic Unit is supported by the department's Specialized Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team (STAR Team). The STAR Team consists specially trained officers who are dispatched to any serious or fatal crash scene. This team investigates crashes under the supervision of Sgt. Jack Ramsey and includes five The driver of this vehicle livedtrained accident reconstructionists His blood alcohol level was .31%, almost four times the legal limit(Sgt. Mike Merritt, Sgt. Jack Ramsey, and Sgt. Greg Workman, Corporal Mayberry, and Det. Johnson). The STAR Team's mission is to respond to, investigate, reconstruct (if necessary) a crash; determine fault; and prefer criminal charges when appropriate. Officers of the STAR team are also called upon to testify in court in the event of prosecution and in civil actions that occasionally arise from motor vehicle crashes.

Traffic safety is becoming an increasingly important concern to our community, and thus to the department. All of our officers in general, and Corporal Mayberry and Ptl. Lunceford specifically devote much of their time addressing traffic related issues and promoting traffic safety in the community.
