EPD OPERATIONS

RECORDS AND ADMINISTRATION

Administration and Records as a vital component of the Elizabethton Police Department. By many estimates, a police officer spends at least one-third of his or her time on duty formulating and completing various forms of paperwork: incident reports, traffic accident reports, citations, statements, evidence and property forms and tags, missing persons or juvenile reports, summonses, warrants, supplemental reports, and others. Multiply all of this paperwork by the number of officers in the department, and the result is a tremendous amount of paperwork, all of which must be properly filed and cataloged.

The Administration and Records division performs these tasks and others in the course of their duties. Other duties include scheduling conducting training for officers, maintaining the docket for city court, arranging interviews and meetings between citizens and officers or detectives, transcribing taped interviews, providing copies of reports to citizens, and other administrative tasks common to police departments.

A program now being offered as an alternative to citizens who have received traffic citations is the defensive driving course. Traffic offenders can request, prior to the scheduled court date on their citation, to take this course rather than paying the fine (thus admitting guilt) or appearing in court. The course consists of a single two hour class taught by one of the EPD's officers. Upon successful completion of the course, the citation will be cancelled. This means that it will not go on the offender's driving record -- or insurance history. The Administration and Records division is responsible for the scheduling of these classes.
